Laser hair removal, whether it is on the back or the legs, is a medical procedure that uses laser light to get rid of unwanted body hair. Laser hair removal works by passing a light beam through the skin so that it targets the melanin in the hair. Once the laser light hits the hair inside the hair follicle, the hair follicle explodes so it is destroyed instantly.
The most common reason that laser hair removal is done is either so people can get rid of unwanted body hair, that is embarrassing or that is to time consuming to remove in other ways. Laser hair removal offers people a way to permanently remove any unwanted body hair. To achieve permanent hair removal, which in this industry is considered 80% or more, you will need to go in for multiple treatments. On average, it can up to four treatments to achieve the best results.
Before you schedule your first treatment for laser hair removal, you are going to want to meet with your doctor to discuss whether the treatment is going to work for you. Here are some other things that you can expect to talk with your doctor about during the meeting:
- Medical history - This is a medical procedure so you will need to discuss your medical history with your doctor. You are going to want to talk to them about any conditions, especially skin conditions, which you have or that run in your family. You also need to tell them about any medications that you are currently taking. This is because of the lasers being used, if used with certain medications or conditions; it can increase your chances of suffering from serious side effects.
- Photographs - Your doctor will need to take pictures of the area or areas that you are having treated from various angles. These pictures will be used for before and after assessments, but they will also be used in the end for reviews of how well the procedure has worked for you.
- Risks, benefits, and expectations - You and the doctor will talk about what you can expect from having back hair laser removal, such as how many treatments will be needed, and how to take care of the area that was treated after the procedure. The doctor will also inform you of any risks that are involved with the procedure and what kind of benefits you can expect from having back hair laser removal. Your doctor will also tell you what laser hair removal cannot do, so that you will not expect certain things that are not possible.
Is laser hair removal a good choice?
Many people find that their unwanted body hair can be embarrassing; this is especially true if the person is extremely hairy. If you find that, your unwanted body hair is embarrassing or if it is just inconvenient for you to have unwanted body hair, you should consider getting laser hair removal. However, before you decide to get laser hair removal you need to find out if it is going to be the right choice for you.
Sure laser hair removal does sound good because it can permanently get rid of any unwanted body hair, which can put an end to ingrown hairs or even having to shave. However, just because an idea sounds good that does not mean it is the right choice for everybody.
Here are two things to think about before you decide if laser hair removal is right for you.
1. Most of the lasers are designed to target melanin. This means that if you have dark hair and light skin you are one of the best candidates for laser hair removal. Because the lasers target melanin, people with dark skin or even tanned skin can have a problem removing the unwanted hair. This does not mean that it will not work it just might take longer than expected or you might need to find a different center that offers different lasers that work better for people with darker skin.
2. Laser hair removal can be rather expensive. However, just because it can be expensive that does not mean you cannot do it, you just might have to save up some money or get it done in installments. Laser hair removal is going to require more than one treatment to remove all of your unwanted hair, so you might just be able to satisfy your needs by having one or two treatments done to save money and then simply use another hair removal method on what is left.
Everybody has his or her reasons for wanting to get rid of unwanted body hair, but only you can decide which method is right for you.
Something else that you need to be aware of before you get laser hair removal done is tanning. If you have a tan due to sun exposure or from a tanning salon, you are going to need to wait until the tan has faded before you get back hair laser removal. The main reason for waiting until the tan has faded is to help reduce the risk of side effects. If you get back hair laser removal with a tan, you are increasing your risk of blistering and discoloration because of the laser targeting the darker pigmentation in the skin rather than just the pigmentation in the hair. Your best bet is to avoid any unnecessary exposure to the sun at least four weeks before you begin treatments, but you should try to avoid it for six weeks to be on the safe side.
One thing that you want to talk to your doctor about is if you can shave before you receive treatment. Some doctors ask you to stop shaving three days ahead of time, where others tell you to shave the day of treatment. No matter what your doctor tells you about shaving, you are going to want to make sure that you avoid waxing, plucking or electrolysis three weeks before treatment. The reason for this is that in order for laser hair removal to be effective you need to have some hair in the hair follicle for the laser to target. When it comes to shaving, you can shave the hair short, but make sure some of it is still visible so that the laser has something to target.
When you go in for your treatment, what is going to happen is a trained nurse or a doctor is going to press a hand-held laser instrument onto your skin in the area that is being treated. Depending on what type of laser device is being used, either a cool gel is going to be applied to the skin or a cooling device on the tip of the laser is going to be used to protect the skin from any damage.
The doctor or nurse will then activate the laser and what will happen is that the laser light passes through your skin's surface into the hair follicles. Then laser produces intense heat that is used to destroy the hair follicle so that no more hair will grow. Here are some other things that you can expect during the procedure:
- You will be wearing goggles to prevent your eyes from exposure to the laser light.
- When the laser is activated, you will feel a small stinging sensation. Most people describe it as a rubber band snapping against your skin. It will be more noticeable in certain areas that are being treated. To help reduce the stinging sensation a topical local anesthetic can be applied before the procedure starts.
- You might notice a strong odor of singed hair. This is normal because the procedure causes charring of the hair stubble.
- Getting your back treated can take up to several hours because of how large the area is.
Once the procedure is completed, you will not have to worry about any medications or bandages. However, you might notice some redness or swelling for the first few hours. In addition, for the first 24 to 48 hours after treatment there might be some stinging. You may also experience some crusting or scabbing, if this happens simply keep the area moist with petroleum jelly. Do not use any lotions unless prescribed by your doctor. Here are some things that you are going to want to avoid after getting back hair laser removal:
- Avoid exercise and physical exertion for the first 24 hours. This is because the perspiration from the physical exertion can increase the irritation that is caused by the laser.
- Avoid exposure to the san or tanning booths for several weeks after treatment. You want to avoid the tanning booths because the ultraviolet light that they use causes damage to the skin. With the sun, if you have to go outside you want to make sure that you apply sunscreen to any of the exposed area to help protect the skin from damage.
- Do not wax or pluck the hair before or after treatments, even the newly grown hairs because you will be heading in for another treatment soon after your skin has healed.
- Do not pick or play with the skin in the treated areas. If blisters are present, do not touch because you can risk infection or if the blister pops, you can cause scarring on your skin.
- Do not rub or scrub the skin as this can cause blisters to burst or skin to peel away. Simply wash the area with a mild soap and some water.
One thing that people are not aware of when it comes to getting their back hair removed through laser hair removal is that it offers many advantages that other hair removal methods do not currently offer. Here is a look at the advantages that laser hair removal for back hair offers:
- One laser session can cover the whole back, and the patients can easily tolerate it. You can see significant results in four to six treatments; with further treatments, you will see continuous improvements.
- Removal of back hair with other methods is hard because of how hard the back is to reach. Therefore, shaving on your own is out of the question and waxing ends up irritating the skin.
- Helps you achieve better results in your sport. For example, it can help increase your speed in swimming because the hair is not causing any drag with the water.
- The process can usually be completed in an hour, depends on how much hair and the coarseness of the hair. One of the faster methods because electrolysis can take anywhere up to 100 hours, with laser hair removal you might have spent 6 to 8 hours for all of your treatments.
Know you can see for yourself why so many men are choosing laser hair removal to get rid of unwanted back hair. It is the best option because it is relatively pain free, but it is also the only method that can be considered permanent.
