How to build a windmill
By Kentent
Introduction:
A windmill can be a nice addition to a garden for decorative purposes, or if can be a great source of energy. Obviously you will want to determine what the best use and you will want to consider how much you want to spend etc. The instruction for how to build a windmill are as follows.
Difficulty rating:
Moderately difficult
Steps:
Step one:
Decide what you want: Functional or decorative. If you choose a functional windmill you will need to have a good spot that gets plenty of wind to power it. If you choose a decorative windmill it really does not matter where it is placed. It is important to consider the cost difference between functional and decorative. Functional is more expensive, decorative does not require moving parts, or special converters to convert the energy. So, for a cheaper variety, go decorative. For something useful, choose functional.
Step two:
Get a kit. If you want to build a windmill you will want to buy a kit for it. A kit should come with all the necessary pieces, wood, screws, nails, etc. for putting a windmill together, it should also come with some instructions. So, go to your local hardware store and get a kit.
Step three:
Consider safety first. If you want to build a windmill you will want to ensure that you consider your safety. If you are going to be cutting wood, make sure you have safety on the saws. If you are nailing, hammer away from yourself, etc. Wear goggles, gloves, etc. A decorative windmill is not worth losing an eye.
Step four:
Follow the instructions provided in the kit. Do not deviate from them as this can make the structure not as stable, or can cause problems. If you want something different than what the kit provides, hire an expert to build plans for you.
Step five:
Set up your windmill. If it is decorative you simply need to take it to where you will have it displayed. If it is functional you will want to set up the converter, install it appropriately etc. You will want to follow the instructions for doing this as well.
Step six:
Paint your windmill, stain it, or whatever it is you want to do to make it decorative and beautiful. So, choose a great color, pattern, stencil on it, or whatever it is you want to do to dress it up some. This is more important for decorative windmills then for functional windmills.
Step seven:
Enjoy!
Tips and warnings:
Before making any cuts for your windmill measure a couple of times. You do not want to waste materials by having your measurements wrong. So, measure, then check your measurement, then double check. It takes only a few minutes, and can save you money and hassle.
Wear appropriate protective gear, and if you are not comfortable cutting the wood yourself or working with power tools, have someone at the hardware store you purchase your kit at cut the wood for you. They will often do this free of charge.
If you are building a functional windmill you will want to place it where it will get the most wind possible, make sure there are no obstructions of the wind such as trees, bushes etc. You may want to hire an expert to help you find the best placement.
