Introduction:

Difficulty rating:
Easy to Moderate

Steps:

Step one:

Treat your pets. If your pet is infested with fleas, the only way to get rid of them is to treat your pet first then tackle all the other areas of infestation. After you treat your pet keep it out of your house until you are done treating your house and yard.

Step two:

If you do not have a serious flea problem you may only have to do monthly spot applications. The best thing to battle fleas and win is to use a monthly spot applicator. These will usually repel most fleas, and all keep the fleas from being able to reproduce, so you won't get a flea infestation. So, use this each month.

Step three:

Talk to your vet. They will know the best products to use for your pet and situation. The reason you want to do this is because the most expensive is not always more efficient when it comes to getting rid of fleas. So, ask your vet for suggestions. This is especially important if you have more than one pet. What may work well for your dog could hurt your cat's skin, and vice versa, so ask. It is better to be safe then sorry.

Step four:

Bathe your dog with a flea and tick shampoo. It kills fleas on contact and so if it has fleas it will give your pet instant relief. However, it does more than that, it also gets them nice and clean, and flea free, and if you get the right kind of flea and tick shampoo it does this while not washing away the effects of your spot treatment from step two. Flea Science Hypoallergenic Shampoo is one of the only dog shampoos that does not wash away topical treatments. So get this kind to help you get rid of fleas!

Step five:

Have your pet wear a flea collar. If you want to get rid of fleas, this is a great line of defense. Flea collars are not all created equal, in fact some have harsh and potentially dangerous chemicals. So, be sure that you choose a collar that will not damage the nervous system of your dog. Ask your vet for good flea collars to choose from.

Essential herbal oils are nature's repellants: they ward off unwanted hitchhikers. And, the best part is that they are repellants, not insecticides.

Step seven:

Now that your dog is clean, and you have taken preventative measures with them, it is time to treat your house. Use house treatment products to get rid of the fleas in your home. Carpet Aerosols should be on the top of the list for how to get rid of fleas in the house. Carpets collect things like fleas. Most house products use adulticides to kill adult populations of fleas. So, choose a carpet spray adulticide aerosol, it is the easiest and often most effective treatment for getting rid of fleas in the house. Foggers also contain adulticides and are very convenient for treating large, open areas. However, they can't treat under furniture, and so some areas are left untreated.

Step eight:

Get rid of the fleas in your yard, or at least control them. This is a must in how to get rid of fleas. You will want to use a flea killer, and be very thorough. Pay particular attention to the areas where your pets spend their time outdoors. If you have a large yard, it may be wise to call in a professional. Do follow up flea removal as often as necessary.

Tips and warnings:

  • Do not use powdered flea repellants and products on pets with sensitive skin, it can dry it out.
