The data on you laptop needs to stay safe. The best way to do this is keeping viruses off your computer.
There is more than one way for a person to lose the data on their laptop, or at least have it be seen by other people. But there are also many ways that a person can keep their laptop data secure. Here are some of the ways a person can keep their laptop data safe.
Losing the laptop
One way that a person can help to keep the data on their laptop secure is for them to keep track of their laptop and keep it safe. Laptops can be stolen or lost just as easily as any other item if a person does not take a few extra precautions to keep it safe. A person should never leave their laptop alone when they are using it in a public place. For example, if they need to use the restroom or if they need a refill on their coffee, they should take their laptop with them or have someone they trust watch it.
There are also laptop locks so a person can lock their laptop to the desk or table there are working at, log out, and leave their computer while they do what they need to do. This way they do not have to log out and pack up all of their stuff just to be gone for a minute or two. It is also important for a person not to leave their laptop in their car, especially if it is in plain sight.
But despite all of the precautions a person takes to keep their laptop safe and secure it can still get stolen. One way for a person to protect the data on their laptop is for them to encrypt it. There are free options for encryption software such as TrueCrypt that a person can use to keep their laptop data safe.
Encrypting files on a laptop is not a perfect solution however. Sometimes they are easy for people to crack and the owner of the laptop and the data has to erase the unencrypted copies of the data on their laptop and then extract the encrypted data from their archive if they want to use the file. It is definitely a bit of a hassle.
Getting access
Besides just encrypting data to keep the data safe, most computers have better ways to reduce the chance of someone else besides the computers owner gaining access to the files on the computer. Obviously there is the main log-in, but there are also smart cards that also help control who can access the laptop's data. Some computers also offer a fingerprint reader as well. And the owner of the laptop can choose to have to log-in with their password and/or use the fingerprint reader.
Online hackers and viruses
If a laptop is connected to the internet the data is not secure and even if the laptop is not stolen by someone, the information inside it could be. Encrypting data is also one of the best ways for a person to protect their laptop data from online sources that want their information.
Though encrypting data can be a hassle, a person can choose what data on their laptop they would like to have encrypted. It is a good idea for any very important or sensitive data that a person does not want anyone else to have access to, to be encrypted.
