How to write an autobiography

Introduction:

When you write an autobiography you are sharing your life, and the meaning you have found in life with others. It is a profound and rewarding experience, and not one to be taken lightly. Writing an autobiography is not easy, in fact looking inward can be very difficult to do, so use the following instructions to do so.

Difficulty rating:
Difficult

Steps:

Step one:

Write an outline that focuses on three main things: who you are in life, what life means to you and what your outlook on the future is. These are the things people want to know about you, and are what make autobiographies fascinating.

Step two:

Go through your outline and think of interesting facts to explain as much about yourself as you can for each of those three areas. For example, if in the who you are in life you define yourself as a mother, you can have an interesting fact be that you provided the after school snack and care for every child in your neighborhood as many of the other mother's work.

Step three:

Start the actual writing, now you have an outline and you have something interesting for each portion of your outline it is time to start the actual writing. The best way to start an autobiography is to state your name. Then you want to do a quick intro of yourself that you will later expound on. For example, explain the type of person you are, such as, "I am a go getter, I have won every award possible in this or that field".

Step four:

Follow your outline that includes those three areas, and after explaining who you are in life, you should be to what life means to you. So, in the next paragraph you are going to want to introduce this so you can later expound. So, state how you see life--what does life mean to you. Are you happy or sad? Do you have a lot of friends or just a few? Do you have a boyfriend or girlfriend? What do you enjoy doing? For example, you might say, "I see life as a way to spread love and joy to others. I have enjoyed many friends in my years, and a special connection with the love of my life (insert name)." This leaves plenty of room for expounding later.

Step five:

Now you will write the next paragraph which will introduce the third section of your autobiography. What is your outlook on the future? Explain what you think the future will be like. You can pick a time, a year, etc. You will want to make forecasts of where you'll be, how you'll be living, if you will be married, have kids, etc.

Step six:

Now fill in. You have introduced yourself, your thoughts, and feelings, now you can use the rest of the space, a million pages if you really want, to explain what got you to those places, who you are and why.

Step seven:

Conclude your autobiography. You will want to do this by once again stating how you are, and by sharing whatever message it is you have for readers of your autobiography. Where that message is to love life and live it up, or tread cautiously, is up to you!

Tips and warnings:

  1. An autobiography can be a very long project if not well planned, so do not skip the outline.
  2. Autobiographies change as the way we see ourselves and the world around us changes, so do not be discouraged if you think it no longer fits, just be sure to date it.
