Looking for a job is very difficult for many people and just plain exhausting for others.
So how do you find a better job? Many people believe that doing something new and different is the key to being successful. But the right answer for you may be right under your nose. Look at yourself and the things you like the most and then see how they can fit into your current position or business or find a talent or hobby that is better aligned with your professional aspirations. Don't be afraid to think outside the box, but also try and think inside the box so you can really know what is different. Sometimes being new and different is just as much of a fad as mainstream though. So try to think of all of the obvious answers and then all of the hidden ones you can find. For example, if you are a visual person who enjoys art, consider looking for opportunities to advance your skills as a photographer. As a photographer, you can earn more money than as an art critic. Write down what you think of and then explore and push the limits of your capabilities to see what you will really enjoy doing. If you aren't sure what you want to do, the first thing to learn is to work hard. No matter how much you love something, if you are not willing to put some blood, sweat and tears into it, then you will never get the fulfillment you are looking for.

Promote yourself

Don't be afraid to start small. There are many corporate presidents and high-level executives that started out as part time, entry-level workers and who made their way to the top of the corporate ladder. Starting at the most basic levels of a business allows you to see all of the inner workings as you work your way to the top. You can develop skills at any level of employment if you have developed the ability to learn and grow from all situations. Finding a company that has room to grow is a good strategy if you are looking for a better job through this approach. Large corporations are always replacing managers and looking for new ways to improve the business. Understanding all the levels of a business can give you an edge over the competition when you are vying for the best jobs out there. If you work your way to the top, others will also see that you are loyal and willing to work hard no matter what.

Perhaps the best way to improve your current position is to be the best at what you are doing now. Employees who are promoted are the ones who do the best work. Those who are never promoted have convinced themselves that they work too hard and are never recognized. Seek to be the best and rewards will come on their own. While great performance reviews aren't the only factor that contributes to promotions, having a great review certainly can't hurt your chances. A difficult balance has to be sought in this area. Others should be able to see and notice your dedication, but flaunting your dedication could lead to such severe animosity that it could prevent you from being allowed to manage others. The quiet, confident type is generally more successful than the boisterous, look-at-me personality. Do your best and those who are really looking for it will notice it and will open up opportunities to advance your position. Balance, restraint and maturity are needed.

It is also great to be popular and to have other people saying good things about you behind closed doors and in casual conversation. Being the company clown is probably not the best approach, but coworkers are more likely to take you seriously when they like to be around you. Have a personality and a sense of humor that allows any situation to be more comfortable. When scouting for a promotion, those who are in touch with the right people have the best chances of success. Make sure that you are on friendly terms with the people who will make the decisions and be sure that the right people know you want a promotion. Most companies want to promote qualified people from within the company, which could give you an edge if your dream job becomes available where you already work. This allows the company to reduce costs for training someone new and more of this may be passed on to you as a promotion. Look for the positions that open up and ask the HR department whether or not they are aware of any upper-level company openings. Apply for positions that you may not be completely qualified for and sell the fact that you are a loyal employee and a hard worker and will learn quickly what needs to be done. Even if you don't get the new job, you will learn more about the inner workings of the company and can leverage that knowledge when the right position is available. Sometimes current employees think they have an edge, but the application and interview process should always be taken very seriously. Everyone else that is applying, including those from outside the company, are very serious about getting the job, so you should be serious too.

A simple way to improve your skills is to look for new skills. Developing marketable skills is important, so being the best at what you do is great but has to happen in context. If you can't translate the skills you have now to another company or position, then the skill needs some honing and improvement. Even if the skills you are looking to develop are just hobbies, you can develop them into valuable skills applicable to other areas. For example, for many people fishing is a great way to relax while others think it is boring. If you are trying to learn patience, look for things that will force you to be patient. Sitting at the edge of a river or lake for several hours at a time can teach you a great deal about patience. So don't learn to do something for it's own sake but think of the additional skills that will naturally come with developing a hobby.

Educate yourself

Education is important in every business field, in every corner of the world. Those who are the most successful are the ones who are constantly learning. And while the adage `Try to learn something new every day' may seem cliché to most, there is a lot of value in applying mantras like this. Making a conscious effort to learn something valuable everyday about something or someone will quickly make you an expert. And just imagine what is possible if you learn two things a day! A college degree is very important to most businesses and they are looking for people have shown enough dedication to get through college. However, college just is not enough anymore. Continuing education is essential to finding the best jobs. And while you may not need to have an MBA to get ahead in your field, it is expected that those who are paid the most know the most. If your company offers tuition reimbursement or will pay for college courses to help you gain more education, take advantage of these opportunities. If you haven't been to college or gained a good education, then now is the time to start. You don't have to have a degree to find a good job but should consider vocational training or other courses that will allow you to be competitive in the job market. Volunteer in your community. Get out and do things that are difficult and outside your comfort zone. Look for experiences that will allow you to broaden your horizons.

Develop business and social skills

Understanding business is the best way to do well in business.  Develop business skills that will help you transition better into other positions.  If you haven't already studied business in college, you should learn some basic business skills.  Accounting, Economics, Marketing and a solid base of Mathematics is important for any kind of job if you want to move up.  It is also a good idea to know something about Organizational Behavior and how successful organizations are set up. If you don't have the money to enroll in a class at a school, then just buy a textbook and learn on your own.  Many companies will expect their employees to have a basic working knowledge of these business concepts and being familiar with them will allow you to qualify for a better job.  Look beyond what you are doing now to what you would like to do and try to see how general business practices will apply down the road.  If your current employer offers to sponsor you in taking this type of course, jump on it.  Take every chance you get to learn more.  You can also develop your business skills just by observing those who do it well.  Ask managers if you can shadow them and see how they operate from day to day.  Find the best and emulate them so you can become better too.  You can also develop your business skills by volunteering for temporary projects or assignments that are outside of your comfort level.  Stretching yourself is the best way to develop and grow.

A basic understanding of common social skills is also needed to advance your career.  Study and practice interviewing skills and work on public speaking.  These will help you to make a good impression when that dream job comes along.  Etiquette is also very important, especially if you will be interacting with clients on a close and personal basis.  Knowing what to say when and developing the art of tact is hallmark to your success in your career.

If you are already doing a great job at work, then keep it up. If there are some things you need to work on, then hone in on them until it hurts.  Any approach that you take should stretch you and success comes from when you can conquer the odds and succeed even when you `shouldn't have'.  Take the approach that is going to work for you and find ways to make your skill development fun and engaging.
