The role of public relations (PR) has drastically changed over the years. Top performing public relations experts are still sought after by companies. Public relations job are one of the jobs that are in high demand. A good PR agent can work with a company and maintain its positive image during high and low times. When the economy is strong, it is easy for a PR agent to turn a profit. When the economy slumps, public relations jobs tend to be on the short end of the stick and many jobs are cut. A good PR agent is able to devise a good PR strategy to keep the company competitive during slow times.

Public relations jobs require the agent to maintain and defend the reputation of a company. Public relations jobs require the agents to position the company in an area of visibility and appear competitive against other companies. A business that can survive negative publicity with tactful PR agents will maintain positive favor from customers.  Public relations jobs consist of several different things including:

  • Public speaking - A PR person is responsible for delivering messages to the media and to the public through a series of different public speaking events. A PR person must have the ability to maintain composure during times of high stress and from various media questions. A PR person must have the ability to maintain the focus of the audience and deliver a message that portrays the company in a positive manner.
  • Counseling - PR people are in charge of providing advice to various people within an organization. PR people must have excellent communication skills and be able to establish relationships with a variety of individuals.
  • Research - PR people must have the ability to research the public and determine buying patterns, popular topics, and other things that their target audience is interested in. When a PR team is able to identify these factors, they can generate mutual understanding with the public and persuade them to do certain things. The majority of a PR agent's time is dedicated to research.
  • Relationships - It has long been known that a PR agent must spend considerable amounts of time building and maintaining relationships with employees, customers, investors, and other interested parties. Pr agents must have the ability to work with the media when they are seeking publicity for their organization.
  • Publicity - PR agents need to build publicity for their company, cause, or product through a variety of sources. Press releases are a standard procedure for a PR agent; therefore they must have excellent written communication skills. Planned messages must be delivered to the media in a fashion that generates interest and sparks the media to cover the story, and distribute it to the public.

  • Community Relations - A PR individual is responsible for making the company look good and appear to have a genuine interest in the community. The PR agent must take the initiative to plan community events that benefit the organization and the community. Charitable donations are one of the best ways for a PR agent to build rapport with the community.
  • Events - PR agents must have the ability to plan various types of public events. These events are designed to generate "buzz" about the company or a product. Typically events are quite large and PR agents must focus on building and maintaining relationships while they are there. If the company is a non-profit organization or is trying to raise money for a cause, the event will be called a fundraiser. Fundraisers are easy, yet hard to plan. The target audience must have a desire to give money to the cause and a need to help. It is important for the PR team to listen to the desires of their target audience at the event and show genuine interest in their concerns.
  • Public Affairs - It is extremely important for a PR person to demonstrate effective involvement in public policy. The PR team is responsible for helping an organization adapt to the needs and desires of the public. Public affairs are often called "issues management". It is the same thing, only with a primary focus on identifying and rectifying the issue of public concern that have a direct impact on an organization.
  • Investor Confidence - Another important aspect of a public relations job is the ability to create and maintain investor confidence. It is important for a PR person to inform the investors about upcoming projects, releases, and other developments of a company. A PR person is responsible for building good relationships with the financial community and needs to have the ability to network.
  • Marketing Communication - PR not only need to have the ability to speak to the public and deliver effective messages, but they need to work hand-in-hand with the marketing department to sell a product, service or idea. PR people need to have necessary marketing skills including a combination of various activities: advertising, direct mail pieces, publicity, promotion, trade shows, internet marketing, and special events.
  • Governmental Affairs - A PR person needs to have the necessary skills to relate to legislature activities and be able to lobby for the organization. They are in charge of regulating with the government on behalf of the organization.
  • Industry Relations - Quite often there is fierce competition in every industry. It is the responsibility of a PR person to relate to other competitors in the industry or trade and work with different associations. It is not always the best procedure to go after blood of the competitors as a PR person, instead statistic have shown it is easier to work at building relationships with them and perhaps exchanging different incentives such as advertising rights.
  • Diversity - It is important for a PR person to have the ability to interact with a variety of people from various countries and backgrounds. Several PR individuals choose to learn a second and sometimes third language to communicate the message of the company more clearly to every interested party. A PR person needs to have the ability to relate to various personalities and they need to work with a variety of groups.

  • Leadership - One of the biggest responsibilities a PR person needs to have is effective leadership skills. A PR person must have the ability to communicate a message to others in a convincing and informative manner. A good leader has the ability to relate to the audience and talks with them instead of at them. The message they deliver is positive and portrays them as an expert in their field.

According to the Department of Labor statics, there were about 243,000 public relations specialists jobs held in 2006. The competition for entry-level PR positions is fierce. Many individuals are hired based on their education and work-related PR experience. Most PR jobs are held in large cities where the PR agents have easy access to press and other media headquarters. The average salary for PR specialists is $47,530. This statistic was from May of 2006, so this number could vary.

Most PR individuals gain a college education in a communications-related field. Several colleges have begun offering PR courses and offer specified degrees in PR. Many companies seek graduates with media-related experience such as print journalism or electronic media. The common thing an employer looks for when filling a public relations job is the individual's ability to public speak. While most individuals gain the necessary training from a college or university, they lack actual work-related experience. Several companies will hire new PR people and send them through a formal training program. This program is designed to teach new PR agents about the company and different responsibilities from experienced PR staff members.

New PR agents often get the "grunt work". Most new PR agents are responsible for filing of various materials; they also need to scan newspapers and other media-related materials for information that can be used in speeches and press releases. New public relations jobs often require the individual to interact directly with the customers and answer general questions from the press.

Public relations jobs require individuals to write speeches. These speeches may be delivered by them or by another individual. For example, the President of the United States has a designed speech-writer. This individual is in charge of writing a speech that addresses public concerns and makes the President look knowledgeable and should have a positive effect on the general public.

In order to qualify for higher-paying public relations jobs, an individual must have creativity, show initiative, understand the human psychology, and demonstrate good judgment while communicating ideas clearly to multiple people. PR individuals must also demonstrate good decision making skills, problem-solving techniques, and research skills. A PR individual needs to have self-confidence and an outgoing personality. Most PR people are enthusiastic about the company or cause they represent, they are the key to motivating other individuals within an organization or the general public. PR people need to be competitive, while also finding effective ways to receive and generate new ideas.
