Tips for making your process leaner

The more effectively your company runs, the more profitable the return will be. Sounds simple enough, but there are many things involved in making your company perform at its best.

Helping your company get to there peak requires training and discipline throughout the entire organization. Making your manufacturing process leaner will take all of the work you are willing to put into it.

To start making processes leaner for your company, you need to start with your management team. Talk with them and agree upon the fact that your business does need a readjustment. Then decide to take action all together.

The management team needs to take the time to brainstorm and come up with the best ideas for your company. Some of the things that should be discussed are:

  • Ways of reducing costs throughout the company such as eliminating waste and controlling variables. Remember the integrity of your company and make sure that cuts aren't made in quality to help reduce costs. If there is a cut in quality, none of the other ideas are going to matter. * How you can increase returns on what you are manufacturing.
  • Creating a continuous flow to enhance productivity in all of the processes within your company. Find changes for your processes that will make them smooth, with less room for error.
  • Strengthening the relationships with your current customers, as well as ways of creating a new and bigger customer bases. Here is where quality is going to make the most difference. The consumer should see a difference in your products, but they should all be for the better.
  • Rising to the challenges that an ever changing competitive market creates. That means knowing what is working for your customers now and what they are going to be looking for in the future.
  • What you can be doing to continuously improve the processes in your company. Part of improvement is increasing the knowledge throughout the company. Everyone should be learning with every experience.

When a decision has been made, it is time to share this new vision with the whole company. Share with them the hopes for production, short term and long term goals should be put forth for them to think about.

Training should start right away. You can bring in people who have perfected process leaning or you can create your own training program. Either way, the sooner you start the sooner you will see results.

If you have a smaller company, now is the time to start working on your first goal. Put into action what was decided and watch the growth explode as your employees become teammates.

If you have a really big company it is time to pick a team to start a "pilot" project. Have this team implement your new plans for their process. This team should get accelerated training that helps them really step up their project. Watch them grow together as a team.

Once you have watched this for a few months you, along with your employees, will be able to see the difference it has made. It is time to put another project into action. How fast you go from here is up to you. If you like the results from the first then get the rest of the company on board.

You are ready for leaner processes throughout your company. If you only brainstormed for the production floor it is time to look at the rest of your company, what about marketing or personnel? Better processes only stop where you do.
