If you have noticed that your computer is running, slower than normal or just doesn't seem to be running like it should the first thing that you should do is a virus scan. The reason for this is that viruses are normally the culprit of causing your computer to act up, such as running slow. If after doing a virus scan, you discover there are no viruses the next thing that you are going to want to do is to clean up your hard drive, which means getting rid of any unwanted files or unused files.
Cleaning up your hard drive is going to free up some of the space on your computer's hard drive, which is going to help it run better. The reason for this is that your computer's performance is not going to be bogged down by useless programs or files any longer. After you have cleaned out all of the useless files and programs, you will want to make sure you defrag your computer so that it can run at its best. The problem that most people face when cleaning out there programs is what are they supposed to delete.
One thing that you can delete is any old programs that you are no longer using. Most of the times your programs are going to be taking up the most amount of space on your hard drive, so if it is something that is not needed you are better off getting rid of it. You will need to carefully look through all of your programs before getting rid of any to make sure that you do not delete any that are crucial to the running of your computer, such as updates for Windows or the program that downloads the updates. When looking at programs you can safely get rid of any unused games on the computer or any extra internet software, such as AOL or Yahoo that you do not use.
The next thing that you will need to get rid of is your old files. There are varieties of files you can get rid of, but you still need to be careful so that you do not get rid of something that you need to allow your computer to run. When starting to get rid of files the first place that you are going to want to go to get rid of unnecessary files is in Internet Explorer because many files are stored here that do nothing but take up space on your hard drive. The main type of file that is stored in Internet Explorer is temporary files. Like the name suggests these files are not needed in order for your computer to run, and you will not need to use them later. They are only needed temporarily while you visit specific websites. If you do not use Internet Explorer, you will need to get rid of your cache files, which are just another name for your temporary files.
You will also need to remove any filecheck files. These files accumulated when your machine isn't shut down properly. The reason that these accumulate is because when it isn't shut down properly some files get lost and your computer automatically saves them as filecheck files. Data files are another type of file that accumulates on your computer. With the data files, you need to go and find the various data files that you no longer need. For example, if you have not opened a file for two years you can go ahead and delete it because chances are you won't need it again. If you do not feel comfortable, deleting it what you can do is save it to a disk or CD, so that you still have a hard copy of the information and then delete it off your computer.
The one thing to remember when cleaning out your hard drive is that if you are not sure about deleting something because you don't know if it is important don't delete it. When you are cleaning out your hard drive it is better to be safe than sorry.
