If you are currently unemployed or even if you are thinking about moving to a different city you are probably joining many of Americans who are busy looking for a job in this struggling economy. Moreover, because of how bad the economy is it seems that trying to find a job now is even harder than it has ever been. The reason why it is so hard to find a job is because not many people are hiring, in fact more and more people are being laid off each day due to the trouble that our economy is in.

Due to how troubled our economy you need to be aware of the fact that right now is not the best time to be looking for a job or to even think about making a career change. However, for some of us we do not have the luxury of keeping our jobs because of our companies having to downsize just to stay in business or our company having to let everybody go due to the fact that they are being forced to close their doors for good. In fact, if you look at the economy you will notice that a lot of well known companies are having to close its doors. The good news is that even with how bad the economy is that does not mean that you will not be able to find a job, in fact you can still find a job as long as you put in the effort.

Here are some tips to keep in mind when it comes to finding a job in the current economy.

Tip one:
Be realistic about how long it is going to take you to find a job. You cannot expect to find a job in the matter of a few days or even a few weeks because of how competitive the job market is right now. Many other people are out there competing for the same jobs that you are competing for and many of these people are going to be just as qualified as you are, if not more qualified than you are for that specific job. What you need to think about is that on average it is probably going to take you about three months to find a job that pays at least $40,000 a year. For each $10,000 over that amount, you are going to need to add on at least one month to your job search.

Tip two:
How you present yourself to potential employers is also going to affect how long it takes you to find a job. You are going to want to work on how you present yourself to other people and if improvements need to be made make them before you start looking for a new job, or improve them as you go along. What you are going to want to do is identify all of your strengths and put them together so that people see you in the best possible light, you want to show off your strengths and minimize your weaknesses. When marketing yourself to potential customers you are going to accomplish this through interviews, but in order to get that interview you have to first convince them you are worth looking at through your resume and job application. What you are aiming for is showing the person who is interviewing you how you will fit into the company and how you can bring added value to the position and company as a whole.

Tip three:
You need to make sure that you have the skills required for a new job. The best way to broaden your current skills is to become cross-trained in your current position. This means having your manager send you to conferences or otherwise expanding your duties so that you are doing new things to increase your skills. If you are currently unemployed the best way to get the skills that are needed is to take a class or two at your local community college or even at an adult school.

Tip four:
Many people find the thought of going through job interviews to be intimidating, just the thought of being interviewed makes them sick to their stomach. The best thing to do is to practice going through job interviews. Get a close friend or family member to give you various questions that can come up in a job interview and practice answering them until you feel comfortable with your answers. The one question that you want to pay close attention to is the one that deals with why you are not currently working. Many people when they talk about why they are not currently working come off sounding bitter and defeated, what employers are looking for is people who come across as positive and confident. The reason for this is that employers want somebody with a good attitude and somebody who has the ability to handle anything that is thrown at them.

Tip five:
When putting your resume together make sure that you highlight your strengths. This is actually the best thing that you can do in today's economy to help you find a job. By emphasizing your strengths, you are going to be able to show a company that you can add value to the company rather than cost them money. You want to show them just how hiring you can increase their value so that they can actually see these results. Therefore, what you want to do is prominently place these achievements on your resume and other job search communications.

Tip six:
Many people think that in order to be gainfully employed that they have to be working a full-time job, what they are not thinking about is that you can put together numerous part-time jobs to form a full-time income. So if you are having problems finding one job that suits your needs, start looking for part-time work that will fit what you are looking for. You can a so look into doing freelance work, which is going to require a different mindset and is not for every industry. Also instead of looking for one job you can find numerous part-time jobs, which can also help to improve your job security in the unstable economy. The reason for this is that if you are working at three different places and one of them suddenly closes its doors you still have the other two jobs left to fall back on. In addition to looking for part-time work, you can also look to fill in for people on a temporary basis, such as maternity leave, just to help get your foot in the door.

Tip seven:
The most important thing that you can do when looking for a job in this struggling economy is to take a close look at the various industries. When looking at the various job industries you are going to want to look to see which ones are still experiencing job growth and which industries have a shortage of workers. You are obviously not going to want to go apply in industries that are experiencing little to no job growth because they simply will not be hiring. Once you have found the areas that are growing or have a shortage of employees you are going to want to focus your search to those industries and clean up your resume and skills to match the skills required for those industries.

Tip eight:
Networking is also another great way that you can find a job in this struggling economy. Through your network, you can find out the ins and outs of the potential job that you are applying for, not to mention you can get inside knowledge about the qualifications you will need and other important hiring information before the public, this includes finding out about the job before other people do. Your network can also help put in a good word for you to the person who is conducting an interview, which can help to sway an employer before you even get brought in for the interview because somebody took the time to recommend you.

Tip nine:
Although you do not hear about them as often as you used to job fairs are still a great place to go if you are looking for a job, as long as you know what it is you want to do. Job fairs bring together a variety of companies that are all looking for capable people to fill the positions that they have open. The good thing about job fairs is that often times you can get interviewed right on the spot because the people who do the hiring are at the job fair. In addition to the fact, that if you nail the interview you could also walk away with the job. Job fairs are usually publicized at your local unemployment office and even in the classified section of your local newspaper.

Just keep in mind that after you have applied for the job you are going to need to take the initiative and call them back to inquire about the job, doing this shows that you are interested in the job and really want it.
